AL DRESSEN’S SUPER SWING REVUE

PLAYING WESTERN SWING with the feeling of the texas playboys, the band started THIRTY five YEARS AGO, in july of 1982. THEIR FIRST GIG AS A WESTERN SWING BAND WAS  AT AUSTIN’S  FAMOUS BROKEN SPOKE DANCE HALL.  The spoke and it's owners are also inductees in the Texas western swing hall of fame and the place to go if you want to enjoy great dance music in Austin.   AT THIS TIME, in 1982, THERE WAS ONLY A HANDFULL OF FULL TIME WESTERN SWING BANDS IN TEXAS.   VOCALIST AL DRESSEN, an austin based musician  who was INDUCTED INTO THE TEXAS WESTERN SWING HALL OF FAME IN 2009 is the group's bandleader.  Al says the revue learned to play western swing at w.s.u., Western swing University.  they took lessons from their teachers there, professors remington, rausch, boatright, white, beasley, and rowe.  In other words, the revue played with these former texas playboys from about 1985 until the early 90's.      

IN THE EARLY YEARS THE BAND INCLUDED SUCH GREATS OF THE WESTERN SWING WORLD AS WESTERN SWING HALL OF FAME MEMBERS  JIMMY DAY AND HERB REMINGTON ON STEEL GUITAR, BOB WHITE, ernie hunter, homer logan, jason roberts, BOB BOATRIGHT, AND BUDDY BEASLEY ON FIDDLES, LOUISE ROWE and billy dee ON BASS, danny levin ON PIANO,  ERIK HOKKANEN ON GUITAR, VOCALISTS LEON RAUSCH, MARYANN PRICE, CHRIS OCONNELL AND JANET LYNN, and Wes starr and neal clausnitzer on drums.  OTHER GREAT MUSICIANS FROM THE REVUE’S PAST INCLUDE GUITARISTS CHRIS SONNENBERG, JUNIOR BROWN, and ronnie stewart, FIDDLERs bill mabry, KATIE HOLMES,  and gene elders, STEEL GUITARISTS LYNN FRAZIER AND MARK ERLEWINE, VOCALISTS  DOUG DAVIS , JANE QUISENBERRY, KRIS BARNES, TISH HINOJOSA, TANA COCHRAN, kimmy rhoades,  AND SHERRY BARR WALKER, drummers DONNIE DOLAN and Michael Christian, DALE DENNIS AND ROBERT POOL ON BASS, and PAUL MCKEE, JON BLONDELL, GARY VAgjRT AND AL GIBSON ON HORNS.

TODAY’S BAND INCLUDES WESTERN SWING  HALL OF FAME MUSICIANS LIKE PAUL GLASSE ON MANDOLIN, (ALSO A FOUNDING MEMBER), DENNY MATHIS ON STEEL GUITAR,  john chandler on drums,  PIANIST Floyd Domino, GUITARIST AND VOCALIST LONNIE ATKINSON, FIDDLERs/vocalists HOWARD KALISH and ricky turpin.  OTHER WESTERN SWING GREATS IN THE BAND INCLUDE MARK KAZANOFF ON SAX and Larry Eisenberg on bass fiddle.

WE ARE PROUD OF ALL OF THE SUPER SWING REVUE MEMBERS, PAST AND PRESENT.   THEY HELPED DEVELOPED A SOUND THAT FEW CAN MATCH.  EVERY ONE OF THEM IS A GREAT PLAYER OF DIFFERENT MUSICAL STYLES INCLUDING COUNTRY, big band SWING, JAZZ, BLUES, COWBOY OR WESTERN, german, and mexican.  GUESS THAT IS WHAT MAKES THEM WESTERN SWING PLAYERS, BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT WESTERN SWING IS.  WE ARE ALSO PROUD TO PLAY WHAT IS DESIGNATED AS THE OFFICIAL MUSIC OF TEXAS, WESTERN SWING.  recently the band was the winner of the 2013 Western swing band of the year award presented by the academy of western artists!!  we are very honored.

THE group GOES BY ANOTHER NAME on the second sunday of each month, WHEN THEY PLAY AT the kreuz market and BBQ IN LOCKHART, TEXAS.  (LOCKHART IS THe PLACE AL WAS BORN.  here the band USEs THE NAME  AL DRESSEN’S BBQ PLAYBOYS, and they play FROM 12:30 pm  TIL 3:30 PM.   THE BAND ALSO plays periodic gigs AT places like THE COTTON CLUB IN granger, THE CONTINENTAL CLUB in austin, GRUENE HALL in Gruene, ANHALT DANCE HALL IN sPRING BRANCH, Callahan's general store in austin, the creedmoor community center in creedmoor, texas, central market south in austin, texas, AND GUERO'S TACO BAR IN AUSTIN to name a few. 

WE HOPE TO SEE ALL OF OUR OLD AND NEW FRIENDS AT A DANCE IN THE NEAR FUTURE.  WEAR YOUR DANCIN’ BOOTS!!
