This band has been playing Western Swing dance music since July of 1982, That's over 39 years. Our first gig was at the Broken Spoke in Austin, Texas. The band has played at dancehalls and for festivals and events all over Texas. They played one Sunday a month at Black's BBQ in Lockhart for five years, and then started playing monthly at Kreuz Market, also in Lockhart, in November of 2016.
They can still be found at Kreuz Market on the Second Sunday of each month from 12:30 pm til 3:30 pm. Whenever they play around BBQ in Lockhart they call themselves Al Dressen's BBQ Playboys!!
This band plays real Western Swing, the Official Music of Texas. In the early years of the band, five of the Texas Playboys played as regulars in the band. This included vocalist Leon Rausch, steel guitarist Herb Remington, fiddlers Bob Boatright and Bob White, and bassist Louise Rowe. They taught us how to play real Western Swing like the Texas Playboys.
Today's Super Swing Revue includes Lonnie Atkinson on guitar and vocals, Howard Kalish on fiddle and vocals, Denny Mathis on steel guitar, John Chandler on drums and vocals, Larry Eisenberg on bass fiddle, Floyd Domino on piano, Mark Kazanoff on sax, Danny Levin on fiddle and piano, Ian Stewart on fiddle, and Al Dressen on vocals. When someone needs a day off because of family business we use Jim Loessberg on steel, Duane Hamilton on drums, Louise Rowe on bass, Paul Glasse on mandolin, and Tom Colwell or Alex Coke on sax.
What a great group of musicians. They play Western Swing, and also Classic Country. When they do Country, they play it the way Western Swing musicians would play it. The band has fun, they laugh at crazy things that occur on stage, they appreciate it when their fellow musicians play something so special that it just grabs you and you just say to yourself, "How did that possibly just happen?" These folks play so that they unknowingly challenge each other to "See if you can beat my last lick!" It's a lot of fun folks!
